Local authorities are urging residents of several communities in northern Israel to stay near bomb shelters amid heightened tensions in the region.

The request was made to residents of Nahariyya, a town about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the border with Lebanon, and to communities near the Golan Heights, Israeli media reported.

The appeal was seen as a precautionary measure, as the Israeli military has yet to submit a request for it.

Tensions are running high following last week’s targeted killings of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Both groups have close ties to Iran.

In response, Iran and its non-state allies – including Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis in Yemen and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon – have vowed to launch a major attack on Israel.
