Refugees learn all that Erie has to offer during Newcomer Orientation

Refugees who recently arrived legally in Erie were given a brief description of the situation on Wednesday.

Catholic Charities organized an orientation for about 20 people who had fled war-torn countries, including Afghanistan and Ukraine.

They were welcomed by Mayor Joe Schember and members of the Erie Police Department.

A man who fled Congo and spent 31 years in a refugee camp said he was relieved to hear the police are not to be feared here.

“It’s very encouraging that the police are here because we’re trying to adjust to life in the U.S. They’re doing everything they can to help us so we don’t have to be afraid,” said Chilumba Mulumba, who just arrived in Erie from Zambia.

Catholic Charities also provides English classes for the newcomers and connects them with other support services as they adjust to life in Erie.
