There’s gold in those hillssomeone apparently thought while looking at it Mountain Panorama. The gold they were looking for was the R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R, one of Nissan’s all-time performance icons. Particularly the well-preserved example held in Nissan Australia’s heritage collection, which was the target of an unfortunately successful robbery.

The theft was reported in Australia Driving force And The Canberra Timeswho write that the car was the very first of approximately 100 R32 GT-Rs sold new in Australia. The 1991 Skyline (registration GTR 091) was later bought back by Nissan in 2015 for inclusion in the heritage collection, and is said to be a completely standard example. That’s probably the main reason why thieves attacked Nissan’s headquarters in Melbourne and made off with the coin-like motorsport icon.

“Unfortunately, our original R32 GT-R was stolen and is now subject to a police investigation,” a Nissan spokesperson told multiple media outlets. The theft is currently under investigation by Victoria Police, although little information is available on its status.

It is extremely unlikely that the GT-R will remain in Australia as it would be easily recognized within the Skyline community. When the R34 GT-R rented by Lewis Hamilton in Japan was later stolen, but was found at the last minute in a shipping container on its way abroad. In all likelihood, this car is already in a container on its way to a distant destination, probably somewhere there. Nissan would have difficulty recovering it. I hope it is saved soon.
