Horse, Renault’s powertrain division, has announced that it is bringing production of its 1.3-liter Turbo Flex Fuel (HR13) engine to Brazil. It plans to produce the engines domestically at its Curitiba plant.

This follows the successful launch of production of 1.0-litre models (HR10) in the country earlier this year.

Guillaume Tuffier, Director of Powertrain Strategy & Advanced Engineering at Horse Powertrain Solutions, said: “When we say we create tailor-made powertrain solutions for markets around the world, we really mean it.”

According to Horse, the Turbo Flex engines are tailored to the unique needs of the South American market and can run on both gasoline and sustainable ethanol. In addition, they all meet the Proconve L7 standard.

More than 170,000 development hours have been spent delivering the 1.0-liter Turbo Flex engine alone to meet the needs of South American consumers. Horse’s Curitiba will have the capacity to produce 500,000 engines annually.

After an investment of R$ 100 million in the Curitiba plant, production of the HR13 will begin in 2025 at the same time as that of the HR10.
