Pope Francis has called for the release of detained former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, offering the Vatican City as a sanctuary.
The Pope reportedly expressed his offer during a private conversation with Jesuits in his recently sealed letter Asia Pacific Tour. “I asked for the release of Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi and received her son in Rome. “I have offered the Vatican to receive her on our territory,” he said Reuters. The country is currently ruled by a military junta that came to power afterwards commit a coup against democratically elected Suu Kyi on February 1, 2021. Suu Kyi, who was subsequently jailed and remains in custody, faces up to 27 years in prison on politically motivated charges.
In response to the Pope’s offer, her son Kim told Aris AFP“I am sure Maymay would express her gratitude to Pope Francis… Nevertheless, I doubt the junta would consider such a request.”
