A Chinese national, identified as a 33-year-old man on a student visa, is accused of pouring hot coffee on a 9-month-old baby at Hanlon Park in Brisbane, Australia, on August 27. The baby, named Luka, suffered severe burns, resulting in lifelong injuries.

  • The research: The suspect fled to New South Wales the day after the attack and left Australia from Sydney on 31 August. An arrest warrant has been issued and Queensland Police are working with international agencies to arrest him. Chinese media reports indicate that the suspect, who worked at a meat processing plant, was angry after his visa application was rejected, leading to the alleged attack “to take revenge on the white people.” A former colleague described him as having “brain problems” and being difficult to get along with. Police confirmed he had no previous criminal record in Australia.

  • Luka’s condition: Luka reportedly suffered life-threatening burns to his face, upper body and arms. He underwent four operations at Queensland Children’s Hospital and is now recovering. According to his family, Luka is currently doing better, although long-term scar treatment is required. A GoFundMe campaign for Luka’s medical bills has raised more than $200,000.
