A pilot has died after a helicopter crashed into the roof of a hotel in Australia on Monday morning.

Queensland police said emergency services were called to the hotel in Cairns, northeastern Australia, at around 1:50 a.m. (15:50 GMT Sunday) after reports that a twin-engine helicopter had crashed into its roof.

“The impact caused a fire on the roof of the hotel. However, the building was evacuated as a precaution and no people on the ground were injured,” police said in a statement.

The helicopter’s sole occupant was found dead at the scene of the crash. Forensic investigations were conducted to officially establish the identity of this person.

An exclusion zone has been declared in the area and the Forensic Crash Unit and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau will prepare a report for the coroner, police said.

The investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
