An Israeli attack on a school building in Gaza City has killed nine people and injured dozens of others, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported on Tuesday.

The target of the bombing was a school building housing displaced people, the report said. The Israeli military said the Palestinian militant organization Hamas had hidden a command center on the site, which was the target of the attack.

“Hamas terrorists used the command and control center to plan and execute attacks,” the military said. The attacks targeted soldiers and the State of Israel. Precision munitions were used to protect civilians and the area was monitored from the air, the military said.

“The terrorist organization Hamas systematically violates international law and operates from civilian infrastructure and shelters in the Gaza Strip,” the army said.

The claims made by both parties could not initially be independently verified.

Only a week and a half ago, an airstrike on a school building used as a refugee shelter caused international shock and criticism. According to Palestinians, dozens of people were killed in the attack. The Israeli army expressed doubts about these figures and also spoke of a Hamas command center in the targeted building.
