The preliminary election results in the eastern German state of Saxony have been corrected. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is now expected to receive one less seat in the next state parliament.
Saxony’s electoral commission reported Monday morning that a software error was the cause of the incorrect calculation of the number of seats based on the preliminary results of Sunday’s vote.
This means that the AfD will effectively not have a so-called blocking minority of more than a third of the seats in the Saxony parliament, which would give the party an effective veto over certain legislation and judicial appointments that require a two-thirds majority.
It is still unclear when the final election results will be announced in Saxony or in the German state of Thuringia, where a new state parliament was also elected on Sunday.
