Nestlé has confirmed that production at a new factory in Ukraine is expected to start in the fourth quarter.
Production at the site in the Volhynia region of northwestern Ukraine was due to begin earlier this year.
The factory, located in the village of Smolyhiv, about 65 kilometers from the border with Poland, will produce noodle products.
Nestlé already has a factory four miles to the east in Torchyn that produces sauces. The company, which says it employs about 5,500 people in Ukraine, has two other production sites in the country: a coffee and confectionery plant in Lviv and a noodle factory in Kharkiv.
A spokesman for the Swiss giant said it could not comment on the reason for the delay.
However, Nestlé has said the two sites in Smolyhiv and nearby Torchyn will be “the European regional hub” for its “culinary products category.” The sites will supply customers in Ukraine and other unspecified markets in Europe.
Nestlé said the opening of the new site will lead to the gradual creation of 300 to 400 new manufacturing jobs.
The world’s largest food producer is on Ukraine’s list of “international sponsors of war,” which until recently was available online to the publicFood companies such as Nestlé, Unilever, Mars, Bonduelle and PepsiCo were also included on the list to raise awareness of the fact that large companies are still active in Russia after the invasion.
The list was withdrawn from public view following complaints from several countries about the lack of a regulatory framework for its management, and allegations about the “negative impact” the list would have on bureaucratic decision-making to counter “Russian aggression” in Ukraine.
In Nestlé’s 2023 annual report, the company listed six factories in Russia that produce beverages, dairy products, “nutrition and health sciences” products, ready meals, confectionery and animal feed.
On its website, the KitKat maker said it had stopped advertising and suspended “further capital investment” in the country while “continuing to honour its obligations to its employees”.
Nestlé added: “For the foreseeable future, these measures will apply as our operations in Russia remain focused on providing essential and basic food products to the local population.”
“New Nestlé factory in Ukraine ready for production by the end of this year” was originally created and published by Just eata brand of GlobalData.
