Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Iran and its allies in the Middle East not to attack Israel.

“We will exact a high price for any aggressive act against us, wherever it comes from,” he said Thursday during a briefing with home front commanders, according to his office. Israel is in a state of maximum readiness for any eventuality, he added. This applies to both defense and possible offensive options.

After the targeted killing Ismail Haniyehthe leader of the Palestinian militant Islamist group Hamas on Wednesday in Tehran, Iran and Hamas threatened Israel with retaliation. Hamas says Israel was behind the Haniyeh attack, but the Israeli government has not yet commented.

News of Haniyeh’s killing came just hours after an Israeli airstrike on a suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut killed Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander. Both Israel and Hezbollah confirmed his death. The Shiite militia, which is allied with Iran, also threatened retaliation.
