BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Debris from what is believed to be a Russian drone has landed in a rural area in Romania, the country’s Defense Ministry said Thursday, the latest incident involving drone debris landing. the war in neighboring Ukraine on the territory of the NATO member.

Since the beginning of the war in February 2022, Romania has confirmed drone fragments on its territory on various occasions.

The remains of what the Defense Department called a drone of “Russian origin” were found after Russian attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure near the border.

A statement said the fragments were discovered by a team of specialists in an uninhabited area near the village of Plauru in the Tulcea region, across the Danube River from the Ukrainian port city of Izmail.

The discovery came after Russia carried out attacks on “civilian targets and port infrastructure” in Ukraine over the past two nights, the ministry said, prompting Romania to deploy fighter jets to monitor its airspace.

The ministry strongly condemned the Russian attacks, calling them “unjustified and in serious violation of the norms of international law.”

Romanian emergency authorities sent text alerts to residents of Tulcea both nights and NATO allies have been kept informed, the ministry said.
