Former Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg does not want to return to the top of politics in his home country after ten years as NATO Secretary General.
The 65-year-old said at a press conference in Oslo on Friday that he would find ways to support his centre-left Labour Party as a full member.
But he added: “I don’t want to be someone who comes home and immediately has an opinion on things I haven’t been involved in for 10 years, such as active Norwegian politics.”
He did not comment on other possible activities.
Stoltenberg was Prime Minister from 2000 to 2001 and from 2005 to 2013. In 2011, he led his country through the difficult period after the attacks in the government district of Oslo and on the island of Utøya, in which the far-right terrorist Anders Behring Breivik killed a total of 77 people.
Stoltenberg has been NATO Secretary General since 2014. On October 1, he will hand over his duties to former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
