Namibia’s state-owned energy company NamPower has partnered with two Chinese companies to begin construction of the country’s largest solar power plant. Reuters has reported.
This step will increase Namibia’s electricity generation capacity by another 100 MW, a significant increase from the current total installed capacity of 500 MW.
The project, worth N$1.4 billion ($78.3 million), will reduce Namibia’s dependence on electricity imports from neighbouring countries such as Zambia and South Africa.
NamPower Director Kahenge Haulofu was quoted as saying Reuters: “The plant will help stabilise future electricity tariff increases, support Namibia’s economic growth and promote environmental sustainability.”
The financing of the solar power plant is obtained through a loan from the German development bank KfW. This loan covers 80% of the project costs.
NamPower will allocate the remaining 20% of its balance sheet.
The collaboration with China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation and Chint New Energy Development (Zhejiang) is expected to cover a construction period of 18 months.
The solar power plant will be commissioned in the second quarter of 2026.
In May 2023, Finnish wave technology developer AW-Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kaoko Green Energy Solutions from Namibia, where an initiative was agreed to produce green hydrogen from wave energy.
The project, which aims to diversify Namibia’s energy sector, is being constructed in three phases. Phase 1 comprises the site design, which will involve the creation and deployment of a wave farm on the coast of Swakopmund, Namibia, which will provide renewable energy to support resettlement and development in the interior.
