China’s CRRC has delivered another 20 passenger trains to the Kenyan capital for the Mombasa-Nairobi rail link.
The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) was built by Chinese companies as part of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The trains were supplied by CRRC as part of a 2023 contract to populate the Chinese-built SGR.
According to the CRRC, the rolling stock consists of first and second class carriages, dining cars, power generation cars and business class cars.
The passenger trains bring the line’s rolling stock to over 60 units, supplied by CRRC. The first 41 trains were delivered in 2017. The Chinese state-owned company has also set up a maintenance and repair facility in Kenya to provide maintenance services for the line.
Kenya’s capital and main port city had been connected by a narrow-gauge railway since 1896, but the line was slow and inefficient. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta made improving the link a priority, describing it as a “new chapter” when it opened in 2017. “After 122 years, Kenyans finally have their new railway,” he said.
China’s Ministry of Transport said it had delivered 230 freight wagons for the Mombasa link in addition to the passenger trains in March 2024.
