A Glasgow woman who became passionate about photography about five years ago has been nominated for the British Photography Awards for the third time in a row.

Jacki Gordon, a retired mental health specialist, started photographing wildlife and her collie Ollie.

During the Covid pandemic she became interested in miniature photography, creating scenes using model railway figures and everyday objects.

Two of her photographs were nominated for the awards: one showing her mother Joan Rodney’s hand and one of an arctic fox in Iceland.

Jacki said: “The competition is fierce and people will see from the other photos that the photos are incredible.

“It’s incredibly exciting to be among all those fantastic photos and photographers.”

The photo of her mother’s hand has been nominated in the visual arts category.

Jacki said: “This photo makes me very emotional.

“My mother hates her hands, but as a very loving mother she agreed to this photo.

“She also has a great sense of humor.”

The image shows a model railway applying nail polish to Joan’s nails.

Jacki’s interest in photography began with taking pictures of her dog Ollie (Jacki Gordon)

Jacki was on a wildlife tour in Iceland when she photographed the arctic fox. The image is nominated in the land animals category.

She said photographing wildlife involves a lot of luck, but in Iceland she also had to deal with freezing temperatures and strong winds.

“The fox is in a snowdrift, so all the snow is swirling around in front of him,” said Jacki.

“The camera wants to focus on a point that is closest: the snow. That’s why I had to focus behind the fox.”

She added: “I’m very, very happy with the photo and feel very, very happy.”

Awards director Hugo Donnithorne-Tait said: “Jacki was nominated in multiple categories, which is an achievement in itself and shows how versatile she is as a photographer.

“We are so happy that photographers like her sign up each year and support our 20 charities. We can’t wait for our gala in November.

“We wish her every success with the prices.”
