Flights at Milan-Bergamo Airport in northern Italy have been suspended after a plane’s tires burst during a landing on Tuesday, damaging the runway.
None of the plane’s passengers or crew were injured, the airport’s operator, Sacbo, said.
An initial reconstruction of the incident showed that the plane’s four rear tires burst upon landing, but the pilot was able to keep the plane on the runway, causing only minor damage to the plane.
After landing, firefighters intervened to evacuate the passengers and crew, Sacbo said.
“Due to an aircraft stranded on the runway due to technical problems, operations are temporarily suspended,” the airport said on its website. “Departing flights have been delayed and arriving flights may be diverted or canceled until the runway reopens.”
It said travelers should expect delays and cancellations until the 1,500 feet of damaged runway can be repaired.
Milan-Bergamo Airport is one of three international airports in the Milan metropolitan area in northern Italy. It is located about 45 kilometers from Milan and is used by low-cost airlines.
