(Bloomberg) — Mexico’s Supreme Court has agreed to a request from judges and magistrates to consider a review of the judicial review approved by Congress last month, according to a person with direct knowledge of the decision.

The decision was approved Thursday by an 8-3 vote. The reform, proposed by former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, calls for the election of all Mexican federal judges, including those of the Supreme Court, by popular vote. Critics argue that the popular election of judges will erode the ruling Morena party’s checks on power and thus undermine democracy.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has said nothing can stop the reform because it was a decision of the Mexican people.
Senate President Gerardo Fernández Noroña said neither the Supreme Court nor the judiciary has any legal authority to review Congress’ decisions. Moreover, the reform will be implemented whether the highest court wants it or not, according to a Senate press release.
