‘Major’ police investigation underway after explosion in Cologne, Germany

MAINZ, Germany — Police are investigating an explosion in the center of Cologne in western Germany. Germany on monday.

The explosion occurred at the entrance to the Vanity nightclub in the Hohenzollernring area, one of Cologne’s main nightlife areas, around 5:50 a.m. local time, a police spokesman told NBC News.

According to police, at least one person may have been slightly injured in the incident.

According to the spokesperson, several glass windows were shattered in the explosion, “and more people could likely have been injured if the explosion had occurred later.”

Local authorities said in a after on X on Monday that a “major” police operation was underway, with residents being urged to avoid the area around the Hohenzollernring.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.

Police told NBC News that the area is under surveillance and that the footage is part of the ongoing investigation.
