An 8-year-old girl from Quzhou, Zhejiang, has received widespread praise on social media for her resourcefulness after she became separated from her grandfather on her way home on July 30.

Instead of asking a stranger for help, the child found a nearby ATM, where she pressed the red emergency button to connect to the bank’s control center. She reached Zhou Dongying, a staff member of Quzhou Rural Commercial Bank, who the police were alerted and kept the girl calm until officers arrived and reunited her with her grandfather. In China, many local ATMs are equipped with two types of emergency buttons: an “emergency call” button to contact the bank and a red “emergency alert” button to alert the police. This incident highlights the effective use of emergency buttons on ATMs, a method that has been used in similar situations before.
