MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. (WTVO) — A local military leader was honored by his community after he was killed overseas nearly four years ago.
Dallas Garza, Chief of Staff of the US Army, was killed in a helicopter crash in November 2020 while on a peacekeeping mission in Egypt.
On Thursday, local police and the Vets-Roll Organization visited Garza’s mother outside her Machesney Park home and placed a memorial banner in memory of her son.
“She was very touched by the thought, very happy. I’m sure you heard her talking about it a while ago,” said Sergeant Joseph Broullard of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. “It means a lot to her to have a place where she can connect with her son in her home. She can see him now, which is a great little thing (to) make her feel a little more comfortable.”
According to Garza’s mother Belinda, becoming a pilot was his lifelong dream.
