The Lamborghini Urus is a impressive second attempt at an SUV for the supercar maker, but let’s be honest, it’s not exactly subtle. That makes it a bad choice of getaway car while trying to evade police, as a Urus driver in Canada learned shortly before his arrest last week, police said. CTV News.
Video released by Canada’s York Regional Police shows the chase starting on a highway and then moving into the Oeroes drive past a police car on a dead-end road. Police say the Lamborghini reached speeds of more than 124 miles per hour during the chase. The Urus then hits what the department calls a “tire deflation device,” causing damage before the driver can get back on the highway. That results in a major blowout, but the driver continues driving for a time at a reported speed of 85 miles per hour after the impact, sending up a shower of what appears to be sparks and debris, as seen on the police helicopter’s infrared camera.
In a part of the chase not seen in the video, Police said in a report released Friday that the driver was briefly cornered at an apartment complex before “intentionally driving into marked cruisers” and escaping, still with a flat tire. Helicopter footage then shows the driver and another car pulling into a parking lot, where the driver and a passenger get out of the car to meet the driver of the other car. Police then swarm in and arrest the drivers of both cars.
The driver of the Urus was charged with dangerous driving, fleeing a police officer and failing to stop after an accident. A second driver was also charged with assaulting a police officer with a weapon. That charge stems from the driver running over an officer’s foot while trying to escape before arrest, an incident cited in the police report that allegedly occurred between cuts in the video of the chase. Photos shared by police from the scene show extensive damage to the Oeroeswho continued to ride on two bald right wheels after the flat tires.
