The Israeli army is calling on all residents of Gaza City to flee, in what observers say is a sign of new, imminent military operations.

People should leave the city in the northern Gaza Strip and head to the towns of Deir Al-Balah and Al-Zawiya in the central Palestinian territory, the call, made in Arabic by a military spokesman, said.

He also described routes that those affected can use without encountering checkpoints. Gaza City is a dangerous fighting zone, the spokesman warned.

According to Israeli media, the army had distributed leaflets in the city in the morning calling on people to leave.

In recent weeks, the army has called on residents of several neighborhoods in the city to flee. Since then, there has been heavy fighting in some neighborhoods, including Shejaiya. The latest call to flee applies to the entire city.

At the start of the war in October last year, Israeli forces carried out combat operations in Gaza City.

Since then, fighters from the Palestinian militant Hamas movement have been trying to regroup there and in other parts of the coastal strip. Gaza City has been one of the areas hardest hit by the destruction of recent months.
