The Israeli military on Sunday called on residents of a northern neighborhood in Khan Younis to leave the area immediately, ahead of a new military operation in the Gaza Strip city.
The al-Jalaa neighborhood of Khan Younis is no longer considered part of a humanitarian zone due to “significant terrorist activity” there, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on Sunday.
The IDF said civilians in al-Jalaa were to be relocated to a redrawn humanitarian zone. The IDF said residents had been informed via text messages, phone calls, flyers and other messages in Arabic.
“The adjustment is being carried out based on accurate information indicating that Hamas has installed terrorist infrastructure in the area designated as a humanitarian area,” the Israeli military said.
Nearly 100 people were killed in a devastating Israeli airstrike on a school building in Gaza City on Saturday, Palestinians say.
A spokesman for the Hamas-controlled Palestinian Civil Defense Force said at least 93 people died in the building, which was being used as a refugee shelter. The incident sparked international outrage.
The Israeli military confirmed the attack, which it said targeted a Hamas command center in the building. At least 19 commanders and fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad were killed, the IDF said.
Israeli killed in West Bank
Also on Sunday, an Israeli citizen was killed in a suspected attack in the West Bank, the Israeli military said.
In the incident, unknown perpetrators fired from a car at several passing vehicles in the northern Palestinian territory.
According to the Israeli rescue service Magen David Adom, two men who were in separate cars were injured by gunshot wounds.
One man was pronounced dead and the other was taken to hospital by helicopter.
The IDF initially gave no information about the identity of the perpetrators. According to Israeli media reports, they fled to a Palestinian village.
IDF forces were said to still be searching for them and had blocked roads in the area.
The situation in the Israeli-occupied West Bank has deteriorated significantly since the start of the current conflict in Gaza, which was sparked by attacks by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7.
According to the Health Ministry, more than 590 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since then during Israeli military operations, confrontations or their own attacks on the West Bank.
Violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians has also increased sharply since October 7.
