The Israeli military says its warplanes are striking Hezbollah targets in Lebanon after detecting rockets being fired into Israel.
“In a self-defense action to eliminate these threats, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) is attacking terrorist targets,” said IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari.
Israel said Lebanese citizens had been warned to immediately leave areas where Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Shiite Muslim group, was active.
Shortly after, Hezbollah reported that it had carried out a large-scale drone attack on Israel in response to the killing last month of the group’s top military commander.
Sirens warning of approaching rockets were heard in northern Israel on Sunday morning.
There are no immediate reports of injuries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he is calling an emergency meeting of his security cabinet.
Israel has been exchanging fire with the Lebanese militant group since the start of the war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip last October.
