Israeli forces carried out an attack on Hezbollah in Beirut on Friday, shortly after the Lebanese militant group fired more than 100 rockets into Israel.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) described Friday’s attack as a targeted attack in the Lebanese capital.

The state-run National News Agency reported explosions in Beirut’s southern districts, including in apartment buildings.

The extent of the destruction and the number of casualties are unclear.

The Israeli strikes came after Hezbollah fired some 120 rockets into Israel earlier on Friday, which the Israeli military said were largely neutralized by anti-aircraft fire.

However, according to the Israeli military, fallen projectiles and shrapnel caused some fires.

Israeli forces also reported on Thursday that they had disabled about 100 Hezbollah launchers that were ready for use against Israel.

Earlier on Thursday, Israel announced strikes on Lebanon as Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah spoke, a day after his fighters were targeted with exploding pagers and walkie-talkies.

Hezbollah blames Israel for the pager and radio explosions and has vowed revenge for the attacks that killed at least 37 people and injured thousands.

The series of attacks has fueled fears that a broader war between Israel and Hezbollah is looming after nearly a year of cross-border attacks.
