Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has congratulated Masoud Pezeshkian, a moderate politician, on winning the presidency.
“I call on everyone to work together,” said Khamenei, who holds ultimate power in Iran and has the final say on all state affairs.
Khamenei said the rivalry that arose during the campaign should be turned into friendship, for the benefit of the Islamic Republic.
Pezeshkian convincingly won the second round of the presidential election on Friday, defeating ultra-conservative hardliner Saeed Jalili.
The head of the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, also praised Pezeshkian.
“We are fully prepared to continue and strengthen cooperation and interaction between the Revolutionary Guards and the government,” he said in a statement.
