TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An Iranian destroyer has sunk while being repaired at a port near the Strait of Hormuz, state media reported Sunday.
The state news agency IRNA reported that the destroyer Sahand, which was being repaired at a dock, became unbalanced after water seeped into its tanks.
The agency added that it is possible to rebalance the destroyer due to the shallow water depth.
It was also reported that injured people were taken to hospital. No further details were provided.
Named after a mountain in northern Iran, Sahand took six years to build and was launched in the Persian Gulf in December 2018. The 1,300-ton ship was equipped with surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft batteries, and advanced radar and radar evasion capabilities.
In January 2018, the naval destroyer Damavand sank in the Caspian Sea after hitting a breakwater.
