Iran’s leaders will take “blood revenge” on Israel, a top Iranian commander warned Thursday, saying it was just a matter of finding the right time for retaliation.

“The only certainty is that the Zionists will bitterly regret this act,” Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, said, according to the Fars news agency. Iran often refers to Israel as the Zionists or the Zionist regime.

The threat follows the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, in Tehran in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Iran and its allies Hamas hold Israel responsible. Israel has not yet officially claimed responsibility.
