Inquest date set for soldier who died on army base

An inquest date has been set for a soldier found dead at an army base in North Yorkshire.

Northallerton Coroner’s Court heard on Wednesday that the case of Nicholas Hart, 33, of Church Village, Pontypridd, in Wales, will be heard on November 4.

He died on 5 February 2022 at Catterick Garrison while serving with the 4th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. He had been in a recruiting role.

After his death, the Army released a tribute describing him as “a popular and likable soldier who was always the quiet and calm voice of reason.”

‘Attracted to him’

The statement added: “His consistent professionalism, personal pride and friendly attitude made him an obvious choice to assist with the regiment’s recruitment.

“He took on the job with ease, and when recruiting in the furthest corners of Scotland he found that his thick Welsh accent proved to be an asset as people would be attracted to him.

“Always smiling, his light-hearted nature and warmth could fill a room. He cared deeply for his friends and family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

His death came just days after another soldier, aged 18, who was based at Catterick Garrison and attached to another unit, was killed. found dead on railway lines in Wythenshawe, Manchester.

Highlander Hart joined the Territorial Army in 2008 and transferred to the Royal Regiment of Scotland two years later.

He was on duty at the London 2012 Olympic Games and had also completed a deployment in Germany.

He received Operational Service Medals for tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
