The ILO programme, which will also include support for the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions, is expected to run from 2026 to 2030 and underlines the commitment of both parties to improve working conditions and promote social justice in Uzbekistan.

During a high-level meeting with Uzbek officials, the ILO Director-General praised Uzbekistan’s progress on labour rights and expressed support for ongoing reforms. Uzbekistan recently celebrated the first anniversary of a landmark labour agreement in its textile and garment industry. The agreement, with the ILO’s Better Work programme and the Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan (FTUU), has led to notable improvements in working conditions and strengthened the country’s position in the global garment market.

“In 2013, Uzbekistan agreed to work with the ILO to eradicate forced and child labor in the cotton harvest. Today, Uzbekistan has become a role model for the ILO and other countries. We stand ready to continue supporting you in implementing your ambitious reforms,” Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo said at the High-Level Conference on Advancing Social Justice that he attended during his visit.

Houngbo also announced a new partnership between the ILO, Uzbek voters and the German government to support the reform of the labour inspection services.

The Director-General congratulated Uzbekistan on its recent election to the ILO Governing Body, the first time in the country’s history.

In May, the cotton sector in Uzbekistan, which was cleared of state-level forced labor in 2021, was asked to investigate an alleged assault on a human rights activist during a trip to meet with cotton farmers.
