The pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah has fired some 200 rockets and drones into areas in northern Israel, it said on Thursday, seeking revenge for the killing of one of its commanders the day before.
“As part of the response to the attack and killing by the enemy in the Al-Housh area of the city of Tyre… the Islamic Resistance (Hezbollah) carried out attacks with more than 200 rockets of various types,” a statement from the group said.
It was also said that rockets had hit several Israeli army bases.
Hezbollah later referred to another airstrike “with a squadron of drones.”
The Israeli military has not yet commented on the attack.
The Israeli military confirmed on Wednesday that it had killed the commander of Hezbollah’s Aziz Unit, Mohammed Naameh Nasr, adding that the unit is responsible for firing rockets and anti-tank missiles from southwestern Lebanon into Israeli areas.
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that a man was killed in an Israeli attack in Houla on Thursday and a woman was wounded in an Israeli attack on Shebaa.
Since the start of the war in Gaza, Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah have been fighting each other on an almost daily basis.
There are fears that the conflict will spread as Israel wants Hezbollah to withdraw behind the Litani River, 30 kilometres from the border – as stipulated in UN resolution 1701.
