Gunfire has been heard in Bamako, the capital of Mali, leading to reports that at least one base where security forces are stationed has been attacked.
Videos on social media show smoke rising from part of the city, with some sources suggesting the smoke plumes are coming from a police or military complex.
Security sources told French news channels RFI and AFP that gunmen attacked one or more camps in the capital.
Mali is one of several West African countries battling an Islamist insurgency for more than a decade. But it is unclear who is behind the shooting.
The military staged a coup in 2021, accusing the government of not doing enough to suppress the uprising.
However, three years later, there is still no sign that the attacks are over.
Witnesses told Reuters news agency that the shots started around 5:30 a.m. local time (0530 GMT).
People who went to the mosque for morning prayers were returning when shots rang out, Reuters reported.
