The States of Guernsey have donated £60,000 to provide “life-saving aid” to displaced people in Sudan.

The civil war has pushed a camp housing about 500,000 displaced people near the besieged Darfur town of El-Fasher into famine, a UN report said. independent group of experts in the field of food safety.

Officials said an immediate donation has been made to the United Kingdom so the UN refugee agency can provide food, shelter and life-saving equipment.

According to Guernsey’s Overseas Aid & Development Commission (OA&DC), the agency has “unparalleled access” to hard-to-reach communities in Sudan.

‘Worst possible news’

According to OA&DC Deputy Chair Chris Blin, women and children continue to be “disproportionately affected by the hunger crisis”.

“It was already difficult to grasp the scale of the food crisis in Sudan,” he said.

“The recent declaration of famine in North Dafur is the worst news and there is now a serious risk that this will happen in other areas as well.

“The malnutrition rates among children under five and among pregnant and lactating women are particularly worrying. Pregnant women are losing their children due to malnutrition.”
