ROME (AP) — The governor of Italy’s northern Liguria region resigned Friday after being under house arrest since May as part of a corruption investigation by local prosecutors.

Giovanni TotiA right-wing governor accused of providing political favors in exchange for campaign funds has denied any wrongdoing.

In a handwritten letter published on Italian news websites, Toti announced his decision to step down and call new elections within three months so that the citizens of Liguria can “decide their future.”

According to the court order confirming Toti’s arrest, he was accused of providing favors to local politicians in exchange for money to finance four local elections in 2021 and 2022.

Toti’s employees and Genoa businessmen, including those involved in the city’s important port, were involved in the investigation.

The Liguria regional government has defended Toti, saying in a statement that he “has always acted in the exclusive interests of Liguria.” The council has appointed the region’s vice-president to temporarily take over all administrative functions.
