Google Maps is now also warning of forest fires in a number of European countries, including many popular holiday destinations such as Italy, Greece and Croatia.

In addition to previous countries such as the US, Brazil and Australia, areas in Europe affected by wildfires are now also identified using AI analysis of various data sources. They then appear as alerts in Google Maps, in Google Search and in location-based push notifications.

In addition to warnings and area information, users also receive information on how to protect themselves. Risk areas are also displayed in planned routes.

The information is not only available to local users, but is also shown to holidaymakers abroad, in the language of the respective device, to avoid language barriers.

Wildfire warnings are already available in the US, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Australia and are now also available in:

  • Andorra

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • France

  • Greece

  • Italy

  • Croatia

  • Monaco

  • Montenegro

  • Portugal

  • Slovenia

  • Spain

  • Turkey

  • Cyprus

How do you receive the alerts? For Android users, the alerts are enabled by default, provided that location sharing is enabled in the settings. iOS users need to enable the Google Search app.
