Google and TikTok were fined by Russia on Wednesday (July 31) for failing to comply with an order from communications regulator Roskomnadzor over banned content. Reuters reported.
According to the publication, the search engine giant was fined 5 million rupees ($58,038) and TikTok was fined 4 million rupees.
The fines follow a crackdown by Russia on foreign tech companies that post content it deems illegal. The country has consistently fined several companies for failing to comply with takedown orders.
Last year, Russia fined Google after the company alleged it failed to remove YouTube videos that spread “false information” and “LGBT propaganda.”
Google, owned by Alphabet, must pay 3 million rupiah because Russia wants more control over what its citizens see online.
The Russian government has been imposing increasing fines on Western technology companies over the past year.
Google has been accused of refusing to remove a number of videos from YouTube, many of which Russia has labelled as “LGBT propaganda”.
According to the TASS news agency, one video in particular, about the LGBT community in St. Petersburg, was considered by Russian prosecutors to have been made by a “foreign agent.”
The fine comes after Russia introduced a new law imposing restrictions on what it considers the “promotion of LGBT propaganda”.
