Eleven people were injured on Sunday when a ride caught fire during a vibrant carnival in a city in northeastern Germany, police said.

Three people were taken to hospital with injuries after the ghost train caught fire at the Gallimarkt, a centuries-old folk festival in the city of Leer.

Police could not yet name the cause of the fire or the damage caused, but said the flames were quickly extinguished and investigations were underway.

City officials had previously said they expected about half a million visitors at the carnival, which was well attended due to sunny weather on Sunday.

The Gallimarkt, once a cattle market, dates back to 1508, and a cattle market is still part of the current fair, which attracts visitors with 19 major fairground attractions and around 250 market stalls around the town centre.
