The German government has pledged support to countries struggling with flooding that has hit Central Europe in recent days, with reports claiming 11 lives.
“People in our neighbouring countries, our partners in Europe and our own people need to know that we are closely monitoring the situation and are ready to help,” a government spokesman in Berlin said.
She pointed to the devastation in Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Romania.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the Technical Emergency Response Agency (THW) stands ready “to provide immediate support if requested.” A spokeswoman for the ministry said no request has yet been received.
Faeser said the THW is closely monitoring the situation along the Elbe and Oder rivers in Germany and is ready to provide assistance in the event of flooding.
