Germany has offered to send Polish soldiers to help with the flooded areas, but details have not yet been agreed, the Berlin Defense Ministry told dpa.

Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had said after a crisis management meeting in Wroclaw that Germany was ready to send soldiers to provide support.

“So if you see German soldiers, please don’t panic. This is help. Just so there are no doubts,” Tusk said.

He was referring to the anti-German sentiment that was widespread among parts of the Polish population, 85 years after Nazi Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, starting World War II.

Poland has been struggling with the consequences of severe flooding since the weekend. Several cities in the southwest of the country have been destroyed. According to Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, there are currently around 16,000 Polish soldiers deployed.
