The German tourism sector saw a record number of overnight stays in August, the national statistics agency said on Friday.

Destatis recorded 59 million overnight stays in the country, eventually surpassing the pre-pandemic record set in July 2019.

Domestic tourists were responsible for 48.9 million stays in August, or 83% of the total, while authorities recorded a 5.7% increase in the number of stays by foreign visitors compared to the previous year.

Demand for campsites was particularly strong in August, with 9.7 million stays registered, surpassing the previous record of 9.5 million set in August 2022.

In total, overnight stays increased by 2% in the first eight months of 2024, Destatis said.
