Germans are losing confidence in their education system, a survey showed on Wednesday.

Only 49% of respondents rated German education as good or very good, down from 56% in 2020 and 70% in 2018.

The survey, which was conducted by the Allensbach Institute for Demoscopy on behalf of the Deutsche Telekom Foundation, found that 80% of German residents believe that politicians do not give education sufficient priority.

More than 90% of respondents agreed that a strong education system is important for German democracy.

According to the survey, only 25% of residents believe that the German education system offers equal educational opportunities to all children, while only 11% believe that the system prepares students well for working life.

The most pressing problems in schools are the teacher shortage, the high number of cancelled lessons and the relevance of the curriculum to work.

In July, more than 1,000 people aged 16 and over were surveyed in Germany.
