German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to Turkey next weekend for talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Government spokesman Wolfgang Büchner said the visit to Istanbul will take place on October 19.

Key agenda items may include migration, the war in Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East and economic issues.

The German government recently said that Turkey has agreed to facilitate deportations. Turkish citizens form the third largest group of asylum seekers in Germany, after Syrians and Afghans.

Another issue could be Turkey’s purchase of Eurofighter aircraft, which would require German government approval.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs in Berlin regrets that “out of principle it does not comment on ongoing processes”.

Erdoğan has repeatedly attacked Israel during the Gaza war and accused Germany of double standards over its arms deliveries to Israel.
