The German Ministry of Economic Affairs published plans on Wednesday for the construction and modernization of gas-fired power plants that will support electricity generation from renewable energy sources.
Power plants must also be designed in such a way that they can use hydrogen.
“This will make the electricity system suitable for a large proportion of renewable energy sources and also ensure security in periods with little wind and little sun,” said Minister of Economic Affairs Robert Habeck.
Experts, associations and companies can respond to the proposals during a six-week consultation procedure.
In the first phase, a tender will be held for a power plant with a capacity of 12.5 gigawatts, supplemented with 500 megawatts of long-term electricity storage capacity.
The gas-fired power stations must be able to convert to hydrogen at a later stage. Power stations that operate purely on hydrogen must also be promoted.
