Air traffic at Germany’s Frankfurt Airport has been temporarily halted after activists from the climate group Last Generation managed to gain access to the airport grounds, police said Thursday morning.

According to a dpa reporter on the scene, several demonstrators broke through a fence in the early morning and clung to the apron of Germany’s largest airport.

“Due to an ongoing demonstration at the airport, all flights are currently suspended,” the airport said on its website.

Passengers have been asked not to come to the airport for the time being and to check the status of their flight online.

“All security services are currently working to resolve the disruptions as quickly as possible,” said a spokesperson for the federal police at the airport.

Six Last Generation activists had gained access to the airport’s runways, the climate group reported on social media platform X. They called for an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2030.

“The continued extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal poses a threat to our existence,” the group said.

A police spokesperson was initially unable to comment on the exact number of demonstrators.

The action comes after Last Generation activists clung to the apron of Germany’s Cologne/Bonn airport on Wednesday, causing flights to be suspended for around three hours.
