The eastern German city of Dresden is bracing for possible flooding on Wednesday after days of heavy rain caused severe flooding across Central Europe.
The Elbe River, which flows through the city, has now reached the 6-metre mark, prompting authorities to issue the second-highest warning level.
This means that built-up areas, main roads and railway lines are all at risk of flooding.
At the Schöna measuring station, near the border with the Czech Republic, the Elbe reached a water level of 6.56 meters on Wednesday morning.
The water level is expected to continue to rise during the day and fall at night. Authorities do not believe the Elbe will reach 7 meters, which would trigger the highest warning level in the region.
Germany has been largely spared the worst effects of the historic downpours and flooding that have hit central and eastern Europe in recent days, with at least 20 deaths reported in Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic and Romania.
