Extreme weather in parts of Canada is causing flooding and power outages in several areas, including Toronto, Mississauga and North Dumfries Township.
Environment Canada issued multiplethe weather warnings There are warnings for rain and heavy thunderstorms on Saturday.
In TorontoFrom 15:08 it will continue to rain extremely heavily, with precipitation amounts of 100 to 200 mm. Mississauga is also experiencing heavy rainfall. According to Environment Canada, this will continue this afternoon through Sunday.
In the Waterloo region, emergency services provided support throughout the area “following a tornado warning and reports of a tornado that touched down in North Dumfries Township,” a press release from the Waterloo Regional Police.
“At approximately 11:00 a.m., police responded to reports of a tornado touching down in the area of Greenfield Road between Northumberland Street and Trussler Road in Ayr,” the news release said. “Multiple homes and businesses in the area sustained property damage and multiple trees and power lines were downed.”
According to Waterloo Regional Police, approximately 3,000 customers in Ayr have lost power due to the storm.
“There were no physical injuries reported in North Dumfries Township or throughout Waterloo County as a result of the tornado and the severe weather,” the release said.
Mississauga Fire said in a post on X that firefighters were helping pedestrians in areas affected by flooding. There were also several road closures.
“Some roads are experiencing localized flooding. Stay safe and plan your route accordingly,” Mississauga Fire said.
Toronto Pearson Airport experienced service disruptions on Saturday due to weather conditions.
“Due to a disruptive storm system over Toronto Pearson Airport this afternoon for an extended period of time, there are many resulting flight diversions and delays on the ground, which is having a major impact on passengers,” Toronto Pearson Airport posted on X. “Travelers are encouraged to contact their airline before departing for the airport. Updates will follow.”
