The European Union believes that Ukraine’s recent incursion into Russia’s Kursk border region is part of the country’s “legitimate defensive war”, a spokesman said in Brussels on Thursday.
The spokesman for the EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell said Ukraine “has the right to defend itself” against Russia, which also includes “attacking the enemy on its territory”.
Russia has declared a state of emergency in the Kursk region because of the fighting. The Moscow Defense Ministry reports that about 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers are involved in the offensive.
The EU spokesman reiterated the bloc’s “full support to Ukraine in its legitimate self-defense against the aggression” and said it would continue to provide Kiev with “political, financial, humanitarian, diplomatic and military assistance.”
