Poland’s longest river, the Vistula, reached a historic low in the capital on Sunday due to drought, the national weather agency reported.

According to the weather institute IMGW, the water level at a measuring station in Warsaw fell to 25 centimeters (10 inches), breaking the previous record by one centimeter.

“It’s worse than 2015 – and the water keeps falling!” the institute said on X, formerly Twitter.

Most rivers in Poland are suffering from drought, IMGW hydrologist Grzegorz Walijewski told AFP last week.

“We have been experiencing hydrological drought in Poland for some time now. Since 2015, there has been a permanent drought,” he said.

According to him, climate change is the cause, because milder winters with less snow, fewer days of rain and higher temperatures cause water levels to drop.

The Vistula, at over 1,000 kilometres the longest river in the EU member states, splits the country in two and flows into the Baltic Sea.
