Dozens of people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a bomb shelter in a school in Gaza City, according to the Hamas-controlled civil defense agency in Gaza.

The Israeli military said it had struck the site on Saturday and described its target as a Hamas command center inside the school.

At least 90 people were killed and dozens more injured in the attack in the Daraj district, according to the Gaza Civil Protection Agency.

The BBC could not independently verify the figures.

“The death toll is now between 90 and 100 and there are dozens of wounded,” spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP news agency.

“Three Israeli rockets hit the school where displaced Palestinians lived.”

Earlier, he described the scene in a Telegram message as a “terrible carnage” and said emergency services were trying to control the fire to rescue the injured and recover the bodies.

The Israeli military said it had “targeted with precision Hamas terrorists operating from a Hamas command center located in the Al-Taba’een school.”

Earlier this week, Israeli forces said they had attacked Hamas “command and control centers” in two schools in Gaza City.

On October 7, Hamas fighters killed about 1,200 people in an attack on Israel, and 251 others were taken back to Gaza as hostages.

The attack sparked a large-scale Israeli military offensive against Gaza and the ongoing war.

According to the Hamas-led Health Ministry in Gaza, more than 39,600 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli campaign.
